My lifestyle is clearly too active – all of my jeans that fit are falling apart at the seams. When showing a couple new teachers around town, an idea for repairing some of my clothes came into my line of vision. They wanted to know where to buy yukata, so we brought them to a couple kimono shops.
At the end of some shelves I noticed small bundles labeled hagire (端切れ), which are the leftover scraps of fabric when one makes a kimono. Prices seemed pretty reasonable considering the quality of the silk used. I picked one up and am pondering how to put it to good use.
I noticed a couple stains, so I think this may actually be an obi (帯) which was taken apart to sell as scrap.

That’s very nice! I thought you were going to say that you were going to make bell bottom flares as a way of repairing the seams of your jeans. But I guess there are better uses for this fabric. What are the measurements of the piece you bought?

About 35cm x 125cm. It was 630 yen after tax. I don’t know if all the samples were the same size.
The pants are already a bit flared, but not as dramatically as those cords we all loved in the 70s from Hash Jeans. I think my actual plan will be to cut the backs out of the worst pairs and use them to patch the fronts of the better pairs. I bought a lot of embroidery thread in bright colors to do the stitching.
