Far Too Skeptical?

by

Recently the Christian Science Monitor ran an article by a young man who lived in Japan. He went on about how he learned Japanese from his girlfriend and ended up talking like a girl. I found the article to be hard to believe as it seemed his was tremendously overselling his position. I wrote a letter to the Monitor strongly expressing my doubts. They sent me a response supporting the veracity of the writer. So, I must be too skeptical.

I have seen many stories about extreme things happening in Japan. Usually the stories relate to Yakuza, police, or societal quirks. Many of them are either entirely made up, or seem very exaggerated. My immediate response is doubt. I find it funny that people seem to want to make the stories extreme, because a lot of fairly peculiar stuff happens without needing embellishment. Like they say: truth is stranger than fiction.
