First Storm

Typhoon number 4, the first storm of the season, is on its way here. It looks like it will pass along the coast, so we shouldn’t get the nasty wind, but tons of rainfall are expected.

Every year that I have been in Japan, the storms have started in May. And every year people say, that is so unusual; perhaps this year we’ll finally have a normal year.

Monday is Umi no Hi (海の日) or ‘Sea Day’. Traditionally, it is a time to give thanks to the sea, because it provides us with our food. The weather should be clear and sunny by Monday, but a three day weekend is going to be pretty messed up. Perhaps, I’ll do a lot of chores around the house.

When do you guys celebrate “Bacon Day” by giving thanks to bacon?

You give thanks to bacon during the Bacon Bowl, silly! It usually takes place in October in Seattle. It’s the Tacoma Police vs. Seattle Police Department. Seattle’s got a smooth team, cuz they’ve got some big Hawaiian/Samoan guys and a former Seahawk/Husky.

Bacon is not very popular here. What we can buy in the store looks exactly like lunch meat quality ham. So, no “Bacon Day” here. I am tempted to look into whether Bacon of the Month Club will deliver to Japan.

We have also found it difficult to find American-style bacon here (NZ). Most of it looks like Canadian-bacon. The closest is “streaky” bacon – which is streaked with fat – yum!
